At Akasi Pharmacy’s Travel Clinic, we support hundreds of patients preparing for long-haul travel every year. Whether you’re heading to New Zealand, visiting relatives in Canada, or jetting off to explore Asia, one question often comes up in our consultations: Can jet lag pills help?
Crossing multiple time zones can wreak havoc on your sleep, concentration, and overall energy levels. In this blog, we’ll explain how jet lag affects your body, when jet lag pills may be helpful, and our recommendations for using them safely and effectively.
What Causes Jet Lag?
Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder caused when your body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm) becomes out of sync with the local time at your destination. Symptoms usually occur after flying east or west across three or more time zones and can include:
-
–> Difficulty falling asleep or waking too early
-
–> Daytime fatigue
-
–> Poor concentration
-
–> Digestive issues
-
–> Mood changes or irritability
The more time zones you cross, the longer it may take to adjust. In general, your body needs about one day to recover for each time zone travelled.

What Are Jet Lag Pills?
Jet lag pills are a general term used to describe medications or supplements that help reduce the impact of jet lag. These may include:
Melatonin tablets – a natural hormone that helps regulate sleep cycles
Sedating antihistamines – sometimes used off-label to aid sleep
Prescription sleeping tablets – for short-term use in specific cases
Herbal remedies or homeopathic pills – varying in effectiveness
Melatonin is the most commonly used supplement, as it mimics your body’s natural signals to sleep and can help reset your circadian rhythm. However, its effectiveness depends on when and how it’s taken.
Are Jet Lag Pills Effective?
In our experience at Akasi Pharmacy, jet lag pills such as melatonin can be helpful when used as part of a wider strategy. Melatonin is most effective when taken in the evening at your destination for a few nights, especially after flying eastward (e.g., from the UK to Thailand or Australia). It encourages sleepiness and helps bring your internal clock in line with local time.
However, it’s important to manage expectations. Jet lag pills are not a cure, and they won’t completely prevent jet lag. They can, however, shorten the adjustment period and improve sleep quality during the first few days of your trip.
Our Advice for Using Jet Lag Pills Safely
Before you pack anything in your travel bag, here’s what we advise our patients:
1. Speak to a healthcare professional first
While melatonin is widely available in many countries, it’s not licensed as a general over-the-counter medicine in the UK. At our pharmacy, we can advise on safe and legal alternatives or issue a private prescription where suitable.
2. Use only as directed
Timing is crucial with jet lag pills. Taking melatonin at the wrong time of day can actually worsen your symptoms. We’ll guide you on the correct timing based on your flight and destination.
3. Avoid mixing with alcohol or other sedatives
Combining sleep aids with alcohol or certain medications can be dangerous. Always let your pharmacist know what else you plan to take during your journey.
4. Only consider stronger medications when necessary
Prescription sleeping tablets or sedating antihistamines may be considered for very short-term use, such as to sleep on an overnight flight. However, they carry risks like grogginess or dependency and should only be used under professional guidance.

Non-Medication Tips to Beat Jet Lag
While jet lag pills can help, we strongly recommend combining them with behavioural strategies:
Adjust your schedule before you fly
Gradually shift your sleeping and eating times by 1–2 hours in the days leading up to your departure.
Stay hydrated during your flight
Dehydration can worsen fatigue and headaches. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol or excessive caffeine.
Get natural light exposure
Spend time outside in the daylight as soon as possible after arriving. This helps reset your internal clock.
Resist the urge to nap
If you arrive during the day, try to stay awake until at least early evening, even if you feel tired. A short nap (no longer than 30 minutes) may help if needed.
